Mozambique: Sofala, Manica provinces without power as high-voltage line down

Maputo, Jan. 4 (Lusa) - The Mozambique provinces of Sofala and Manica, in the centre of the country, have been without electricity since Wednesday, due to the collapse of a pylon carrying a high-voltage line, Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM) said in a statement.

The line in question runs from Matamba, in the province of Tete, to Chibata, in Manica.

EDM has said that it is taking steps to ensure that the provinces of Sofala and Manica provisionally receive electricity from the hydro-electric plants of Chicamba and Mavúzi, in Manica, until the problem can be definitively solved.

According to local media, the two provinces' economies are all but paralysed as a result of the power cut, with some businesses only operating thanks to generators .

Notícias, the country's main daily, reports that Beira, the capital of Sofala province, is suffering from "noise pollution" due to the massive use of generators.
